Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based psychotherapy that was initially developed to treat individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, it has since been adapted to address a wide range of mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and eating disorders. At The London Practice, we are pleased to offer DBT therapy and DBT group therapy at our newly opened South Kensington clinic.

DBT combines cognitive-behavioural techniques with concepts of mindfulness, acceptance, and emotional regulation. The primary goal is to help individuals develop the skills to manage intense emotions, improve interpersonal relationships, and build healthier coping mechanisms. DBT focuses on four core modules:

  • Mindfulness: Increasing awareness of the present moment and cultivating a non-judgmental attitude.
  • Distress Tolerance: Developing tools to cope with and endure painful situations without resorting to destructive behaviours.
  • Emotion Regulation: Identifying and managing emotions effectively.
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness: Enhancing communication skills to maintain healthy relationships and assert boundaries.

Benefits of DBT Therapy

DBT therapy offers numerous benefits for individuals struggling with emotional dysregulation and mental health issues. One of the key advantages of DBT is its structured approach, allowing individuals to follow clear, step-by-step techniques to change negative thought patterns and behaviours. It also emphasises the importance of acceptance and change, encouraging clients to accept their emotions while working toward positive changes.

Some key benefits include:

  • Reduced emotional distress: DBT helps individuals navigate intense emotions without feeling overwhelmed or resorting to harmful behaviours.
  • Better relationships: By learning how to communicate effectively and assert boundaries, clients can experience more meaningful and fulfilling     relationships.
  • Improved coping mechanisms: DBT equips individuals with practical tools to handle stress and difficult situations without turning to negative or     impulsive reactions.

DBT Group Therapy at The London Practice

In addition to individual therapy, we offer DBT group therapy at our South Kensington clinic. Group therapy provides a supportive environment where individuals can share experiences and practice DBT skills with others. This setting allows participants to learn from one another, enhancing the therapeutic experience and reinforcing the skills learned during one-on-one sessions.

Group therapy promotes a sense of community and shared understanding, helping individuals realise they are not alone in their struggles. It's an excellent option for those looking to build social connections while working on their mental health.
