Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a collaborative process where you work with a trained therapist to explore emotional difficulties, behavioural patterns, and thought processes. It offers a confidential and non-judgmental space to gain insight, develop coping strategies, and foster personal growth.

What types of therapy do you offer

At The London Practice, we provide a range of evidence-based therapeutic approaches, including:

• Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
• Psychodynamic Therapy
• Person-Centred Therapy
• Existential Psychotherapy
• Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)
• Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
• Compassion Focussed Therapy (CFT)
• Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT)
• Systemic Therapy
• Couples and Family therapy

Our therapists tailor these approaches to meet your individual needs andgoals and can meet in person at one of our London clinics, or online.

How do I choose the right therapist?

Selecting the right therapist is crucial for effective therapy. We recommend reviewing our practitioners' profiles to understand their specialisations and therapeutic styles. Consider factors such as the therapist's experience with specific issues, therapeutic approach, and your comfort level during initial consultations.

What can I expect during my first session?

The initial session is an opportunity for you and your therapist to get to know each other. You'll discuss your reasons for seeking therapy, your personal history, and any specific goals you have. This session also allows you to ask questions and determine if the therapist's approach aligns with your needs.

How long does each therapy session last?

Typically, individual therapy sessions last 50 minutes. However, the duration can vary depending on the type of therapy and individual circumstances. Your therapist will discuss the session length with you during the initial consultation.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies based on individual needs and therapeutic goals. Some clients benefit from short-term therapy, while others may engage in longer-term work. Your therapist will regularly review progress with you and adjust the treatment plan as necessary.

Do you offer online therapy?

Yes, we offer online therapy sessions, providing flexibility and accessibility for our clients. Online therapy can be an effective alternative to in-person sessions, especially for those with scheduling constraints or mobility issues.

What are your fees?

Our fees vary depending on the therapist's qualifications and experience. We offer some concessionary rates and reserve a limited number of low-cost sessions for individuals on lower income. Please refer to our fees page for detailed information.

Is therapy confidential?

Yes, confidentiality is a fundamental aspect of therapy. All information shared during sessions is kept confidential, with certain legal exceptions (e.g., risk of harm to self or others). Your therapist will discuss confidentiality policies with you during the initial session.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No, you do not need a referral from your GP to access our services. You can self-refer by contacting us directly to schedule an initial consultation.

Do you accept private health insurance?

Yes, we work with a number of private health insurers. Please contact us directly to see which providers we accept and how to arrange payment through your insurer.

Can therapy help even if I’m not in crisis?

Absolutely. Therapy isn’t only for times of crisis—it can also support personal growth, self-awareness, and better relationships. Many clients come to therapy simply wanting to understand themselves better or make meaningful changes in their lives. Some well regarded health commentators hold the view that regular talking therapy is as important and valuable to their health as regular physical exercise.

Is therapy culturally sensitive and inclusive?

Yes. At The London Practice, we are committed to providing an inclusive and respectful environment. Our practitioners work sensitively with clients of all cultural backgrounds, identities, and lived experiences.

Do you offer therapy for couples or families?

Yes, we offer both individual and couples therapy. If you’re navigating relationship challenges, couples work can provide a safe, structured space to understand each other more deeply and build stronger communication.

Can I switch therapists if it’s not the right fit?

Yes. Finding the right therapist is a personal and important part of the process. If you feel the match isn’t working, we’re happy to support you in finding a different practitioner within the practice.
